The Nassopoulos Family has been producing olive oil from the Kalamata region of Greece for many generations. George Nassopoulos, Founder of Greek Gourmet, Ltd. began importing the family oil under the label Golden Green Kalamata, Nassopoulos Family Groves, after a career in engineering left him wanting to reconnect with his roots.
Born and raised in Athens, Greece, George spent summers at his father's village of Meropi in the Peloponnese region. He was exposed to his grandmother's home made fresh baked bread from a stone oven, local retsina wine, home spun honey, goat cheeses and fresh eggs from the family's live stock and, of course, the olives and oil from the family olive groves. He learned to cook the traditional Greek dishes from his grand mother and mother as they had from the generations before them.
As a youth, George sought a life in America after the war had left Greece with little opportunity for his generation. He immigrated to the United States on a Fullbright Scholarship, where he became an engineer and created his own family. His work with a French-American ship builder led him on extended trips to France where he and his wife discovered fine French cuisine. Their passion for food and return visits to Greece lead them back to the village, not just to visit, but to cultivate the olives.
The ancient groves of the Peloponnese region have produced sustaining oil for centuries. When George and Diane set out to import this oil to the United States, they were pioneers. They began importing olive oil before it was recognized for all of its nutritional and culinary value and even his family members questioned whether the US would develop a taste for Greek Olive Oil. George's work on the Greek Trade Commission helped educate the international market on the intrinsic value of the olive fruit and its bi-products. Today olive oil is a staple of the American diet.
The Nassopoulos family continues to cook, dine and import the olives, oil and other delicacies from the same region of Greece. Representing many farms and manufacturers, they support the local Greek culture and bring their traditions to be enjoyed in the United States and abroad.
Greek Gourmet, Ltd. has expanded its product base to include rolled wafers, fruit jams, and teas from Greece and India. George and Diane continue to explore new products and ideas with regular visits to the Greek countryside searching for local gourmets and hand picking foods to share. They have led culinary tours and cruises through Greece and Turkey, inspiring renewed enthusiasm for adventurous diners who follow their lead.
